About Garry Weare

Garry Weare led his first trek to Kashmir in 1973; 50 years on and over 25,000 kms later, he is still going strong regularly leading high altitude treks in Ladakh and Nepal .

His experiences are included in his definitive guide ‘Trekking in the Indian Himalaya’ published by Lonely Planet, a title that he regularly updated since the first edition, published in 1986.

In 2003, at the age of 55 Weare embarked on a five-month trek from the source of the Ganges to Kashmir. The ensuing adventure formed the basis of his acclaimed travel narrative ‘A Long Walk in the Himalaya’ Transit Lounge.

Garry Weare is a former director and now consultant to the adventure travel company World Expeditions; a founding director of the Australian Himalayan Foundation; Honorary Secretary (Australia) Himalayan Club and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. 

Over the last 40 years Garry Weare has given numerous talks and lectures on the Himalaya in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, and India. As a recognised authority on the Himalaya, Weare has been regularly interviewed on radio, TV and print media.  He has also been engaged as a consultant on a number of film documentaries, from ABC Journey to the Himalaya series in 1979 to being the Australian identity in a recent ABC Foreign Correspondent program on the Zanskar region of the Himalaya. In 2011 Weare was invited to Kashmir to give the keynote address on adventure tourism in the Himalaya as well as being presented with a lifetime’s achievement award.

Garry lives in the Southern Highlands NSW with his wife Margie Thomas and in between leading treks spends most of his time hovering around wombat holes.
